Dear friend,
What writing system do you use? Korea uses its own unique character set, Hangeul. Hangeul was invented by King Sejong, the fourth king of the Joseon Dynasty, in 1443. When he first invented Hangeul, it was named as Huminjeongeum (¡®the correct sounds for the instruction of the people¡¯). He created Hangeul for the people who had lots of hardness because there were no easily-recognized written characters. After inventing Hangeul, he had scholars write explanations and examples of the correct sounds of Huminjeongeum. This book, Huminjeongeum Haeryebon (The Huminjeongeum Manuscpript) was listed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme. If you have any questions about Hangeul, please visit the website below.

Dear friend,
Have you heard about the Hangeul writing system that Koreans use? Koreans have used Hangeul since its invention in 1443 by King Sejong. Hangeul is quite different from the written character sets of neighboring countries such as China and Japan. Hangeul consists of 14 consonants and 10 vowels; these 24 characters can cover almost every spoken sound. In particular, the consonants of Hangeul are easy to learn because the characters were patterned after human speech organs and the stroke-adding principle, which adds strokes to basic characters to create new characters. Thanks to these features, Hangeul is recognized as one of the most scientific and logical character sets of the information era. I can feel this feature when I send text messages in Hangeul through cell phones, one of the representative information devices of our time. If you have any questions about Hangeul, please visit the website below.

Dear friend,
I think most artists in every country are eager to find something that gives them new inspiration for their work. Several Korean artists get inspiration and create their works based on the motif of Hangeul. One of famous Korean fashion designers who made inroads into Pret A Porter in Paris, France, caught public attention by releasing clothes printed with stylish Hangeul. Beautiful handwriting in Hangeul is gaining popularity in movie titles, posters, album covers and books that are closely related with daily life. Hangeul is also used as an inspiration for modern dance. Can you imagine this? If you want to know more the various ways in which Hangeul is used in the arts, please visit the website below.

Dear friend,
There are a lot of great individuals in the world. Of course, I think that your country has many great individuals respected by your people. I want to tell you about King Sejong, one of the greatest kings in Korea History. As the fourth king of the Joseon Dynasty, he is famous for the creation of Hangeul, the written character set used by Koreans. King Sejong invented Hangeul after realizing that most Korean people were hard to express themselves due to a lack of a practical writing system. It seems that his warm-heartedness touches not only Koreans but also people around the world. UNESCO presents the UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize, named after King Sejong, to individuals, organizations and agencies dedicated to the fight for literacy. Dear friend,
As the fourth king of the Joseon Dynasty, King Sejong is one of the greatest and most respected men in Korea. He is credited with several monumental achievements including the creation of Hangeul, the written character set used by Koreans. First, he drove Japanese pirates out of Daemado Island and declared the island part of the territory of Joseon through the dispatch of official documents to the Japanese government. He also drove the Yeojin(Jurchen) tribes out of the vicinity of the Amnokgang and Dumangang rivers, opened new territory and expanded the country's land.

In particular, King Sejong was famous for the recognition and appointment of those with superior capabilities regardless of their social standing. Thanks to this policy, the scientist Jang Yeongsil, who came from humble origins, was able to invent various devices including a gauge to measure rainfall, the world's first rain gauge, an astronomical observation apparatus and watches.

Among other things, I deeply respect King Sejong¡¯s humanistic ruling principle. He created Hangeul after realizing that people had difficulties due to the lack of a practical writing system, prohibited amoral interests and even allowed female servants who gave birth to babies in district government offices to take maternity leave for 100 days. His achievements are remarkable even from today's perspective. If you want to know more about King Sejong, please visit the websites below.
